About Us

Falcon Expeditions is a local, family-run business providing unique camping experiences to get you outdoors! Our passion for adventure and our love for the Appalachian Mountains began at an early age. Founders and co-owners, Matt and Elizabeth Thompson, both grew up in Western North Carolina. However, school and work led us to Toronto, ON, Raleigh, NC and subsequently Atlanta, GA. Together, we ran one of Atlanta’s most iconic and beloved restaurants, Mary Mac’s Tea Room. We gained a unique set of skills running the family business and working with generations of hard-working families. We made friends with so many amazing people over the years, serving political leaders, celebrities, tourists, and our Atlanta neighbors. One of the most important lessons we learned was that we were better as a team and enjoyed working side-by-side. In 2019 our newborn son, Elias, joined our team and worked with us daily at the restaurant. He may have been the most popular employee to date! Even with the gratifying experience of running the family business, we found that we were escaping to the mountains to camp every chance we had. Each trip was an instant reset from the hustle and bustle. Our camping adventures even took us abroad to the Eastern Coast of Australia. This trip was a pivotal moment in our adventures, it changed everything. We discovered this movement called Overlanding. Although it is not a new concept, it is relatively new to the US and we embraced it with open arms. The concept is that with self-reliance and the desire to embrace the journey as part of the adventure, you can travel and explore many remote locations. Countries like Australia and South Africa, and even many of the parks in the Western United States have the infrastructure and natural landscapes that make this attainable for those traveling in everything from bikes to decked-out 4x4 vehicles. Why had we never really heard of this in Western North Carolina? The forests are different here - they are dense, diverse, and biologically sensitive. Wide-open spaces are not as prevalent, making those remote locations and primitive campsites harder to find. This is what we aim to provide - unique camping experiences. These Mountains have much to offer and hold a special place in our hearts. Many people share our love of these Mountains and in recent years, many from the overlanding community are looking to these forests for adventure. We look forward to sharing an adventure with you. Whether it’s your first time camping or you’re an avid Overlander, we have something for everyone. Come take a deep breath of fresh mountain air, dip in the cool mountain waters, explore the natural beauty of Western North Carolina, and camp with us. It’s time to hit the reset button!
